Free quilt pattern: Fire Island
The Fire Island quilt pattern is a great quilt for beginners who want to practice their technique – it has large pieces and a simple design that is very forgiving.
Also, the large picket-fence units that are the highlight of the quilt provide a substantial opportunity to feature your favorite fabrics and offer lots of space to try out a variety of custom quilting motifs.
Quilt pattern dimensions
- Finished quilt: 68 ½” x 76 ½”
Quilting and finishing tips
- Piece and trim the backing fabric so it is 6” to 8” larger than the quilt top. Layer the quilt top with batting and backing.
- Use the red print 2 ½-wide strips to make double-fold binding; sew the binding to the quilt.
Show off your quilting prowess by featuring a variety of your favorite designs. The patchwork pickets and the contrasting red background are a great opportunity to feature two different designs. In the image above, you’ll notice ribbon candy, woodgrain, echoed spirals, parallel diagonal lines and more.
Need some inspiration for other quilting designs? Other great options for this type of pattern would be an Ocean Breeze or Bananas and Berries filler.
