This colorful table runner pattern comes from Rebecca Gore, daughter of APQS dealer Brenda Shreve of Red Barn Quilting in Barnsdall, OK. A recent trip to visit her brother and his family in Edinburgh, Scotland, inspired Rebecca to create this easy project that goes together very quickly. Though she traveled through Europe in college, seeing Edinburgh through the eyes of her two small nephews gave her a totally different experience this time around.

The family tried as many fun activities as possible during their time together. The museums, castles, train rides, bus rides, and visits to the boys at school all had one thing in common — the “queue” (a line of people waiting their turn). Rebecca fell in love with the word – especially when her young nephews said it in their Scottish accent! She found the word to be a very cheerful way to describe a very mundane activity.

That inspired her to create bright blocks that happily “queue up” in this simple table runner. She chose cheery oranges and greens to reflect the abundant vibrant flowers and shrubs that seem to bloom constantly in Edinburgh, contrasting against the city’s gray skies.

Rebecca is a modern quilter drawn to simple quilting. She chose simple horizontal quilting lines to create a calm repetitive texture throughout the table runner. She used Insul-Bright™ batting to provide protection against any heat transfer from a hot dish to her table.

She used the leftover Insul-Bright™ batting to whip up an oven mitt (instructions are included as a bonus.)

Rebecca credits her quilting interest to her mom, Brenda, who has been a long arm quilter for decades. Creativity is a shared trait for this duo. Brenda chose happy, solid colors for her rendition of “Queueing Up”, adding grey fabric to set off the squares. Her mixture of wavy and straight line quilting adds interest and pep to the piece!

Rebecca owns her own quilting and design business called Birch Lake Designs, which has its base at Brenda’s Red Barn. You can also find Rebecca on Instagram and Facebook. The Barn also has an APQS Millie, Lucey and Lenni available for rent for quilters who love to finish their own projects. Plus, it’s stocked with over 50 wide quilt back fabrics, batting, and a full assortment of thread to match just about any quilt! You can find The Barn on Facebook here.
