With the gorgeous, snow-capped Rocky Mountains reaching to the sky on the horizon, it’s not a surprise that APQS Dealer Myrna Ficken found inspiration for the pattern “Forest Snowfall” in the boughs of evergreen trees dusted with snow. At her studio in Highlands Ranch, CO, fresh, powdery snow can blanket the ground one day, and then melt away soon after. But whether your trees are naked this time of year or they’re green and lush, this wall hanging will take you through Christmas and well into the New Year!

This is a great stash-busting project if you’ve got a bin of green fabrics tucked away. Using fabrics with different values adds richness and depth to the evergreen trees. Myrna accomplished that by using a Dream Big Green Leaf panel by Hoffman Fabrics, which includes a full range of greens.

Her use of a textured fabric for the background makes it look like the trees are nestled in snowbanks! Imagine the fun you can have freehand quilting swirls and whirls to simulate blowing snow. 😊

Paper piecing makes this project go together quickly. Each tree is constructed with paper-pieced strip units to provide variety to the evergreen bough lengths. Then the strips are joined together to build tall trees.

After constructing the trees, you can adjust the finished size of the quilt or the location of the trees by adding “spacer” rectangles above and/or below each one. You can add a border to make the quilt larger, or even make a few more trees for your own personal forest!

Myrna’s quilting experience spans decades. Her talent has garnered many awards and her work has been published in many books and magazines in the quilting trade. She loves sharing her passion with quilters across the U.S. and internationally at trade shows and seminars. Myrna brings a fresh outlook to her classes and techniques and she encourages students to be progressive and innovative.
