Square Peg in a Round Hole

Travel just an hour or so north of beautiful Glacier National Park in Montana and you’ll discover Dragons Heart Quilt Shop nestled in the shadows of the Rocky Mountains in Pincher Creek, Alberta. Quilters from Calgary, Lethbridge, and even Fernie, BC already know about this hidden treasure. But thanks to the Row by Row Experience, the secret is out! Even more quilters are flocking to the shop to check out the wonderful fabrics and patterns at Dragons Heart Quilt Shop, rent time on APQS longarm machines or even buy one of their own, and take classes designed for every skill level.

Lynn Brasnett and Jenny Root are always looking for new ways to inspire their customers and students by creating pieces with them that will last a life time. The word “family” means a lot to these long-time friends. When the customers and students see the quilts they have made or finished in the shop, Lynn and Jenny want each of them to know how much they are appreciated and welcomed into the Dragons Heart family.

That is why they chose to include as their free quilt pattern called “Square Peg in a Round Hole.” This quilt was originally inspired by a family member who had once again decided to step outside of her comfort zone and head off into the world to do what her heart told her to do. She was away for 18 months and Jenny wanted her to have something warm and cozy to remind her of home. The original quilt was pink and brown, but Jenny and Lynn recreated it to share with their new quilting family around the world.

This time, they chose to remake the quilt using the fabric line Kaleidoscope by Camelot Fabrics with Hobbs 80/20 for batting. They used Peacock Glide Thread on top, and a Tuscan-colored pre wound bobbin. To keep it soft and flowing, they quilted the project with their APQS quilt path using a digitized pattern called “Loose Threads” from Urban Elementz.

In the pattern, Jenny included a picture of the original quilt made along with the purple one that one that is now on display in the shop, but if those two color choices don’t inspire you, Lynn and Jenny recommend that you “do what you would love best! Try using your favorite layer cake to cut the circles instead of stripping them or by make it as scrappy as you want!” And if you just can’t find the right mix of fabrics in your stash, you can find a full range of fabrics to choose from at Dragons Heart Quilt Shop that would complement this pattern perfectly.
