Myrna Ficken of APQS West in Littleton, CO loves to celebrate holidays! She is always looking for ways to maximize her piecing and quilting time so she has more time to enjoy family and friends. Her “Pick Your Holiday Table Topper” is perfect example of her creativity and efficiency. Myrna cleverly designed a center block with plenty of room for either an applique design that suits the season, or quilting motifs that complement the holiday!

This easy quilt pattern is just that, easy. Change the fabric to match your season or décor, or embellish the center block with a holiday symbol. The quilt goes together so fast that Myrna has made several for lots of events through the year, including one for Valentine’s Day, fall, and winter as shown, plus some for her APQS Showroom in Littleton, CO. She even created one using solid fabric and featured it in her Creating Spaces DVD, an educational DVD designed to help quilters look at quilts and quilting spaces with new perspective beyond the limits of seam lines.

For smaller tables or a very fast gift, Myrna has also made the center block motifs and left the two outer borders completely off the quilt! In the quilt shown she used Quilters Dream wool batting to provide texture and Glide thread in the color Sand to blend with the fabrics. To play up the holiday she added freehand holly in outer border and undulating waves in the gold fabric border. For the cornerstone blocks she chose to do freehand quilting to fill the spaces with even quilting density.

Myrna combined some computerized quilting with her freehand designs, using her APQS Quilt Path to place identical designs in the half-square triangle corners as well as the center block. She used the “Christmas Holly Triangle” digitized pattern by Christie Dillon in those triangles, and cleverly divided the center block into half-square triangle sections so she could use the same design there. In the green sides she used “Christmas Forest” by Lorien Quilting, Both digitized patterns are available from Digi-Tech Patterns.

If you’re still looking for that perfect holiday gift, you can whip one of Myrna’s table toppers up in an evening! And if you live in the Denver area you can even rent time on one of the APQS machines and quilt it yourself with Myrna’s expert guidance to help you. Happy Quilting!
