Business tips: Knowing when you’re ready for customers

I want to quilt for customers

One of the biggest questions new longarm quilters face is, “How do I know if I’m good enough to take customer quilts?” The truth is, you don’t need to be perfect — you just need to be consistent, confident in your process, and capable of delivering a clean, finished quilt that you’re proud to return.

Am I ready?

A good sign you’re ready is when you can load a quilt smoothly and squarely every time. If you can manage tension across different thread types, recognize when something looks “off,” and fix it without panic, you’re already ahead of the curve. You should also feel comfortable quilting edge‑to‑edge designs with even spacing and smooth, fluid lines. Wobbles happen to everyone, but your overall pattern should look intentional and steady.  If you have Quilt Path, you can be confident your stitches will look great!

Other than practicing my quilting, how should I prepare?

Prepare for customers by practicing your workflow: intake forms, pricing, design and thread choices, and how you package a finished quilt. When your process feels repeatable and your results look consistent, you’re ready.

I can do this!

Most importantly, remember this: customers aren’t hiring you for perfection. They’re hiring you for care, reliability, and the joy you stitch into their quilts. You’ve got this! Your skills will only grow with every quilt you take in.
