Marilyn Badger, a successful professional quilter and teacher, complained to her husband Hartley a few years ago that she was frustrated with her inability to quilt straight diagonal lines on her customers' quilts.  Hartley, a retired engineer, listened and after some thought and a little ingenuity, came up with the first prototype of the Hartley Fence.
