Jessica's Story
"It’s
all about sacrifice," explains 20-year-old Jessica Porter of Hudson,
Florida. Americans who have paid the ultimate price in Iraq "have
sacrificed everything to protect us. I just wanted to give their families
something respectful in return."
In May
2003, Jessica began spending 12 to 15 hours a day creating a memorial
quilt for every family that has lost a loved one. Tragically, the list of families
awaiting her quilts grows longer almost every day.
To reward her tireless commitment to Operation Homefront Quilt and ease her burden, APQS donated a new
Millennium longarm quilting machine.
Each of Jessica's quilts is approximately 40"
by 60" and is mega stippled, which enables Jessica to finish 7 to 8
quilts per day on her longarm machine instead of just one on a regular
sewing machine. Stipple quilting is one really long squiggle line
that twists and turns but does not cross itself.
With your help, Jessica has already completed
and sent more than 750 quilts to families as of October 2004.
How To Help
Jessica needs:
-
Quilt Tops: completed size 40"x60" tops. Jessica
will finish and send to the families.
-
Avoid: black fabrics, July 4th themes, rockets, firecrackers,
celebration designs. No rag quilts.
Operation Homefront Quilts is asking for lap size quilts.
If you're sending quilt tops make sure they are 40"x 60",
while if you're finishing the quilt they can be larger. They should be made with 100 percent
cotton fabric in patriotic colors, prints, or themes.
Also, please label the quilt with your personal label including name,
address and e-mail address. (If you want to write something
more, you may say, "With gratefulness for your loved one's ultimate
sacrifice and devotion to freedom, Operation Homefront Quilts would like
to present this memorial quilt."
OHQ would like the quilter to include a piece of the
uncut matching fabric to be used for binding.
Please send materials (and notes of
encouragement) to:

Tell Your
Friends About Operation Homefront Quilt
Once we receive your
quilt, we sew on a machine-embroidered label that says: "In Remembrance
and Gratitude", the soldier’s name and rank, "American Hero 2004." We
then photo transfer a picture of the soldier to this label from one of
the military Websites. When time allows, we will write to let you know
which family received your quilt. Thank you for honoring these
deserving American heroes and their families.
