What’s the best way to store your quilts?

October 8, 2013

Where do quilts like to live? In the hands of someone who appreciates them! And when they aren’t being cuddled, loved, swaddled or snuggled under, quilts do best at the same temperature and humidity as people do. That’s why it’s a good idea to store quilts in a space where you’d feel comfortable yourself.

  • Avoid locations that see extreme temperatures and dampness such as attics, garages, and basements. This can lead to mildew and odors in quilts.
  • Find a spot that is clean, dry, moderate in temperature, away from light, and well ventilated.
  • Skip the plastic bag or box storage idea. These can also trap moisture and pests. Plus, more than one quilt has inadvertently been carried out to the curb’s trash bin since it was hidden in a dark plastic bag!
  • Wrap quilts in clean cotton sheets or pillowcases, or use acid-free boxes.
  • Fold the quilt so the back side faces out, and use as few folds as possible. Protect the folds from becoming permanent by crumpling up some acid-free paper and tucking it into the folds as cushion.
  • Re-fold the quilts every few months.
