Much of Denise's life has been expressed through the love of
drawing and painting. In 1989 she brought those skills into her new
passion...quilting. With no prior experience in fabric and thread use,
Denise was at a loss on how to construct her vision in fabric. Over a
five year period she learned how to manipulate this new medium and
ultimately introduce fine art skills and tools into her wall quilts.
Beginning with commercial fabric, she often enhances and transforms
it with paint, pencil and ink. The discovery was that the figurative
work took on a dimensional quality that paint and canvas could not.
Denise says, "I was actually dressing my figures in real fabric!" The
quilts are constructed using techniques ranging from hand and machine
piecing and applique to heavy machine embroidery and quilting.
Without making a strong environmental statement, Denise
is satisfied if the viewer is drawn into her work and has a personal
reaction to it. That can be as simple as "I love the colors" to "one
day that will be no more".
